This issue's musician of note is one of our stellar violinisst/fiddlers -- Elke Baker. As with many of the musicians we are graced with on Sunday afternoons, Elke has had a long and varied career in music. We're very fortunate to have her!
Elke is a local girl, having grown up so close she remembers riding the Dentzel Carousel as a child. She played classical violin and viola when"younger," but her professional career has focused on folk music of many genres, especially dance music. She has played for Waltz Time dances since the series first started in 1995 and has been a regular with Olde Vienna for many years at the annual Viennese Strauss Ball.
Her main expertise is Scottish fiddle. Let me count the ways: U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion in 1995; teacher for 23 years and currently Music Director of the Potomac Valley Scottish Fiddle Club; organizer of the fiddle program at the Ohio Scottish Arts School at Oberlin; teaching at the Washington Conservatory of Music; and performing in concerts and at dances in North America, Japan, West Africa and Scotland itself!
She loves the varied repertoires of the groups she plays with for Waltz Time -- French muzettes with Trio Con Brio, contemporary with Sugar Beat, Celtic with Terpsichore, the big band of Blue Bamboo and Strauss styles with Olde Vienna. Elke has recorded on five solo and small ensemble albums (most recently Out of the Wood) and is even working on a book. Now living in mid-Maryland with her husband and three children, when she's not playing fiddle, she enjoys cooking, baking, hiking, reading and writing! Sounds like a full life to me.
