May/June 2013

Philosophers have argued for centuries about how many angels
can dance on the head of a pin, but materialists have always known
it depends on whether they are jitterbugging or dancing cheek to cheek.

The 30th Annual Viennese Strauss Ball

An Evening with Strauss

Waltz Time will present the 30th Annual Viennese Strauss Ball on Saturday, May 4. This benefit event is always a highlight of the spring season, giving dancers a chance to strut their stuff in elegant attire – while supporting Glen Echo Park.

The classical ensemble will feature OLDE VIENNA with Dave Wiesler, Alexander Mitchell, Chelle Fulk, Barbara Heitz, and Ralph Gordon. They will play a program of Viennese waltzes of varying tempos, with a sprinkling of other couples dances, including polka, schottische and tango. An introductory Viennese Waltz lesson at 8 pm is followed by dancing until midnight in the Spanish Ballroom. A Grand March, dance cards, Carousel rides ($1.25/person) and refreshments complete a perfect evening. $20/person. Please visit Waltz Time for more details.

Glimmer of Glass - 2013 Gala in the Park

Saturday, May 18, 6 pm - midnight

"Glimmer of Glass" is the theme for the 2013 Gala in the Park, which benefits the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture. The art glass theme is inspired by the brilliance of Italy's glass traditions, and the gala is presented in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy. The Embassy's Cultural Attache, Renato Miracco, will be in attendance.

Maryland Lt. Governor Anthony Brown will be honored in recognition of Maryland's continued support of the arts and humanities. Glen Echo Park's art glass studios, Glen Echo Glassworks and the Art Glass Center at Glen Echo, will also be celebrated. William Gudenrath of The Corning Museum of Glass - one of the foremost authorities on glassmaking techniques from the ancient world through the 19th century - will present the award to Glen Echo Glassworks.

The gala includes a reception, seated dinner, live music by the Boilermaker Jazz Band, dancing in the historic Spanish Ballroom, awards ceremony, silent auction, and carousel rides on our 1921 Dentzel carousel.

Over the past several years, the Gala in the Park has been featured in Washington Life magazine, WTOP's "Man About Town" with Bob Madigan, and The Washington Post's The Scene.

Waltz Time is proud to be an annual supporter of the Gala in the Park fundraiser and encourages dancers to join them in support of the Park's programs, while enjoying a fabulous evening of dining, awards, live music, and dancing to the Boilermaker Jazz Band. There are two tiers for attending the Gala - full reception and dinner/dancing ($200) or "dance only" ($25). For more information and to purchase tickets, visit Gala in the Park. We hope to see you there!
