May/June 2011

All the misfortunes of mankind, all the dreadful disasters
that fill the history books, the blunders of politicians
and the faults of omission of great commanders,
all this comes from not knowing how to dance.

The 28th Annual Strauss Ball

It was a glorious evening in the Spanish Ballroom at the 28th Annual Strauss Ball. To see photos by Mark Judge, visit Bethesda, Patch.com. And while you're at it, take a moment to see the video by Mark on YouTube. Many thanks to Mark and to all of our dancers who celebrated this annual benefit event. It is a highlight of the spring season, giving dancers a chance to strut their stuff in elegant attire – while supporting Glen Echo Park – and taking a ride on the 1921 Dentzel carousel, now in its 91st year of service!

Waltz Workshops with Lilli Ann Carey, April 16 & 17

The many avid waltzers who attended Lilli Ann Carey's Latin Fusion workshops on April 16 and 17 were introduced to several new moves and sequences and treated to impressive partnering by Lilli Ann and her daughter, Claire. Lilli Ann and Claire recorded videos of the lessons, which are available on YouTube or through the Dance For Joy! website.

Day 1:

Note: There's a lot of ambient noise on the first video, so the instructors re-recorded a recap in the (quieter) annex.

Day 2:

Several attendees asked about music. Here are a few of Lilli Ann's suggested Latin waltzes:

Lucha Reyes

  • Tu Vos
  • Regresa
  • Soy Tu Amante
  • Yo Tengo Una Pena
  • Jamas Impediras

Inti Illimani

  • Entre Amor
  • Negra Presuntuosa

Josh Groban
  • Si Volvieras a Mi

Tish Hinojosa

  • Manos, Huesos y Sangre
  • Sacrificios
  • Vida Prisonera
  • Donde Voy

Luciano Pereyra

  • Quiero Tu Voz
  • Me Pusiste A Llorar

Lilli Ann mentioned that some dancers asked if she would conduct another workshop in cross-step waltz, which she taught at Glen Echo in February 2008. If you'd like to learn cross-step (or want a refresher), please email us at info@waltztimedances.org so we can gauge interest. Thank you.

Art Deco Glen Echo

Saturday, May 14, 6 pm - midnight
Spanish Ballroom, Glen Echo Park

Waltz Time will be honored at this year's Gala in the Park, the Glen Echo Park Partnership's annual celebration and fundraiser! Waltz Time will receive the Organizational Achievement Award for its exceptional history of donations that have helped to support Park programs and to renovate the historic buildings. As a proud sponsor of the 2011 Gala in the Park, we invite you to join us at this year's celebration.

The annual Gala in the Park is a wonderful way for dancers to support the Park's programs and facilities and enjoy a fabulous evening of dining, awards, live music, and dancing to the Boilermaker Jazz Band. The band has a GREAT repertoire of '30s waltzes for you to enjoy along with some swing and slow dance numbers. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit Gala in the Park and be sure to scroll down to see the "dance only" option. We hope to see you there!

Jeepers Peepers

Congratulations to Mary Jo Ondrejka, a waltz regular (and sometime instructor), who, with two friends, took the top prize in the fiercely competitive Peeps Show V, the 2011 Washington Post Peeps Diorama Contest. Titled "Chilean CoPeepapo Mine Rescue," the elaborate bi-level display recreates the mine rescue in marshmallow.

To see this prize-winning example of imagination, patience and dexterity, as well as other entries and background features, go to Peep Show V.
