January 2009
And those who were seen dancing were thought to be mad
by those who could not hear the music.
-- Friedrich Nietzsche

| STRAUSS BALL 2009 | DANCE POEMS | SUNDAY WALTZ SCHEDULE |
We wanted to start the new year with some reflective verses on the subject of dancing. Many kinds of poems came to mind, but the Dancer by Carl Sandburg is one that we thought you would enjoy. We hope you'll send us your favorite poem for our next issue! Just send it to staff@waltztimedances.org along with the poet's name.
by Carl Sandburg
THE LADY in red, she in the chile con carne red,
Brilliant as the shine of a pepper crimson in the summer sun,
She behind a false-face, the much sought-after dancer,
the most sought-after dancer of all in this masquerade,
The lady in red sox and red hat, ankles of willow,
crimson arrow amidst the Spanish clashes of music,
I sit in a corner
watching her dance first with one man
and then another.

As always, there will be an introductory Viennese Waltz lesson at 8 p.m., followed by dancing until midnight in the Spanish Ballroom. Check Waltz Time for more details as we get closer to the date.
