Sunday Waltz with CONTRATOPIA, March 1

Free Valentine’s Day Waltz at Brookmont

Brookmont Church presents a waltz on Friday, February 14, at the Brookmont Church Social Hall, 4000 Virginia Place in Bethesda. Waltzting from 8-10 pm with the Waltzifiers (classic rock converted to waltz rhythm) and Djangolaya (gypsy jazz in waltz rhythm). The free dance is a casual affair. The stars come out in the afternoon in Glen Echo’s Spanish Ballroom–the WALTZING STARS TRIO, that is: Alexander Mitchell (fiddle), Marty Taylor (winds, concertina) and Liz Donaldson (piano) . If you’re a beginner, come early, 2:45, for a waltz lesson, then stay for the music and dance, 3:30-6:00, all included in admission of $13 per person ($5 with valid student ID). Country Waltz Lessons at Nick’s, Tuesdays, January 7-28

Country Waltz lessons at Nick’s Nightclub in Alexandria are featured on Tuesday nights this month: January 7, 14, 21, 28. Each lesson runs from 7:45 to 8:45 in the back room; cost is $5.  Both Beginner and Intermediate levels will be taught by Linda Bloyer. No partner necessary. Lesson is followed by DJ dancing. Happy New Year, dancers. Begin 2020 the right way–WALTZ! The marvelous musicians who ushered out 2019 last week, Liz Donaldson, Ralph Gordon and Alex Mitchell, accompanied this week by Carrie Rose, will usher in the 2020 waltz year as WALTZ WEAVERS. Continuing the tradition, there’s a beginner waltz lesson at 2:45, followed by dancing from 3:30-6:00 in Glen Echo’s Spanish Ballroom, all included in admission of $13 ($5 with valid student ID), payable in cash or by check (sorry, no credit cards). No partner required and ALL are welcome.

There’s a honey of a trio playing on Sunday: HONEYSUCKLE ROSE with Andrea Hoag (fiddle), Paul Oorts (button accordion, mandolin, banjo, guitar) and Liz Donaldson (piano). If you’re new to the dance, arrive at 2:45 for a beginner waltz lesson, which is included in the admission price of $13 per person ($5 with valid student ID), payable at the door by cash or check. Not joining the lesson? Music from 3:30-6:00. No partner needed and ALL are welcome. Please wear shoes that will be kind to the historic ballroom floor. Dress in layers!

As we look toward 2020, we want to let you know that the Waltz Time schedule is nearly final and will be posted on our website, www.waltztimedances.org.

Our friends from Mostly Waltz in Philadelphia have posted several videos demonstrating and then breaking down various waltz moves and sequences. Search for Peggy Leiby on YouTube to view them.
